Empirical issues in markets and organizations Output price , markups , and producer

چکیده
This paper examines how output prices and markups vary across the size distribution of producers. It uses unique plant-level data on physical output, revenue, and input expenditures for six homogeneous U.S. manufactured products. The results reveal that, for five of the six products, output prices decline systematically with increases in plant size. In the most extreme case, corrugated boxes, the smallest producers have prices that average 20 percent above the mean price while the largest producers average 10 percent below the mean. At the other extreme, the price dispersion for gasoline is small and unrelated to plant size. Plant-specific markups of price over marginal cost vary across the size distribution of producers for five of the products. In three cases they decline, in two cases they increase, and one product, gasoline, shows no systematic variation. JEL classification: Ll ; L6

Prices, Spatial Competition, and Heterogeneous Producers: An Empirical Test
In markets where spatial competition is important, many models predict that average prices are lower in denser markets (i.e., those with more producers per unit area). Homogeneous-producer models attribute this effect solely to lower optimal markups. However, when producers instead differ in their production costs, a second mechanism also acts to lower equilibrium prices: competition-driven sel...

متن کاملMulti-product exporters, variable markups and exchange rate fluctuations
In this paper we investigate how firms adjust markups across products in response to fluctuations in the real exchange rate. In a theoretical framework, we show that firms increase their markups and producer prices following a real depreciation and that this increase is greater for products with higher productivity, a consequence of local distribution costs. We estimate markups at the market-pr...
متن کاملAn Empirical Analysis of Exchange Rate Pass-Through to Iran's Saffron Export Price
Exchange rate pass-through to the price of traded goods is one of the important issues in economy of developing countries such as Iran and affects the efficiency of the exchange rate policies to improve the trade balance. The main aim of this paper is to empirically analyze exchange rate pass-through to Iran's saffron export price using panel data for twenty destination markets during 2000–2011...

The study investigates consumers’ preference for cowpea reflected in the Nigerian markets through price discounts and premiums that consumers pay for different cowpea characteristics. The price data used for this study were obtained through a market survey. A common data collection protocol was employed. Every month, between October 2009 to December 2010, five cowpea samples per seller were bou...
